Mitt Romney Responds To Mueller Report with Hot Take, Gets Crushed For It

Republican Senator Mitt Romney said Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 400-page final report offers some good news to the Trump administration and to the nation at-large, but claimed it also “sickened” and “appalled” him.

The current GOP Senator and former Republican presidential nominee shared his personal reaction to the Mueller report in a tweet where he said the report’s final conclusion of no collusion may not be enough to save the reputation of President Trump.

“It is good news that there was insufficient evidence to charge the President of the United States with having conspired with a foreign adversary or with having obstructed justice,” Romney wrote in a tweet. “The alternative would have taken us through a wrenching process with the potential for constitutional crisis. The business of government can move on.”

The Republican senator then reflected that the damaging information in the report offers a “sobering revelation of how far we have strayed from the aspirations and principles of the founders,” the Washington Examiner reports.

“Even so, I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office of the land, including the President,” Romney continued.

“I am also appalled that, among other things, fellow citizens working in a campaign for president welcomed help from Russia — including information that had been illegally obtained; that none of them acted to inform American law enforcement; and that the campaign chairman was actively promoting Russian interests in Ukraine,” he added.

The Washington Examiner reports:

Romney was one of the few Republicans to criticize the president in the wake of the report’s release, as Trump declared it a vindication.

The nearly 450-page report released by the Justice Department on Thursday described “numerous links” between the Trump campaign and Russians, but Mueller said “the evidence was not sufficient to support criminal charges.” The special counsel also detailed numerous instances of possible obstruction of justice but did not make a conclusion on whether Trump obstructed the investigation. Attorney General William Barr instead made the conclusion, determining Trump did not obstruct justice.

The reactions to Romney’s take were mostly negative, with several people remarking how Romney’s view of the president seems to ebb and flow when its politically convenient for him.

Governor Mike Huckabee quickly called out the former Massachusetts governor, saying critically: “we need flip-flops on the beach, not in the Senate.” Look:

BizPac Review adds:

After spending the entire 2016 presidential election trash-talking Trump, Romney suddenly transformed into a sycophantic suck-up following the president’s election victory, all in a bid to convince then-President-elect Trump to nominate him to serve as Secretary of State.

Two years later during the midterm elections, Romney ran to the president for an endorsement as per his bid to win election as a Utah senator. That endorsement presumably helped propel him to victory. Yet two months after winning the election, he suddenly trash-talked Trump again.

Huckabee was not the only one criticizing Romney.

President Trump previously criticized Romney for his flopping, BizPac reports:

Given the senator’s habit of flip-flopping whenever it suits him, some suspect it won’t be too long before he performs another flip and starts praising Trump again for one reason or another.

In the days leading up to Romney being sworn in as a senator in January, the president wondered aloud whether he’d be a quality senator or just another “Flake.”

“Here we go with Mitt Romney, but so fast!,” he wrote “Question will be, is he a Flake? I hope not. Would much prefer that Mitt focus on Border Security and so many other things where he can be helpful. I won big, and he didn’t. He should be happy for all Republicans. Be a TEAM player & WIN!”

It was a reference to former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, a man whose flakiness and constant anti-Trump rhetoric earned him the ire of a large chunk of the Republican Party’s base.
