U.S. Women’s Soccer Team Star Tosses American Flag On The Ground During Celebration

The United States Women’s National Soccer team defeated the Netherlands on Sunday 2 to 0 in the World Cup finals, defending their world champions title with back-to-back World Cup wins.

The moment was joyously celebrated by the players and those watching live at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais stadium in Lyon and many others around the world.

Amid these celebrations, however, one women’s national team star, Allie Long, dropped an American flag to the ground so she could celebrate with fellow stars Meghan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, Fox News reports.

The moment was captured by several outlets broadcasting the game and its celebrations and quickly made its way onto social media where Long was criticized over the action.

“Kelley O’Hara, who was knocked out of the match with concussion-like symptoms, was praised, however, for running in and picking the flag up soon after it had been dropped,” Fox News adds.

President Trump did not comment on the flag incident or any of the comments from the women’s national team players that were critical of him—he, instead, congratulated them on the win.

Despite Rapinoe protesting the national anthem by taking a knee, an act she called a “good ‘F you’” to President Trump, and declaring that she would not be “going to the f–king White House” if the team won the championship, a play backed by teammate Ali Krieger, the president and first lady responded with class Sunday to their victory.

“Congratulations to the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!” the president tweeted.

“Congratulations to 2019 Women’s World Cup Champions @TeamUSA! ⚽️🇺🇸,” the first lady said.
