On Friday, President Trump voiced his frustration with Democratic lawmakers and their seemingly unending investigations into him.
Speaking with a group of reporters at the White House, Trump echoed the conclusion of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 448-page final report: that there was no collusion between Trump campaign officials with Russian entities to win the 2016 presidential election.
The president also argued he did not commit obstruction of justice since there was no crime in the first place and because he allowed the special counsel to freely interview more than 500 witnesses.
The White House event was organized so Trump could announce an immigration deal the United States scored with Guatemala. In one of his answers, the president tangentially mentioned Democratic lawmakers’ persistence in continuing investigations.
“All they want to do is impede. They want to investigate. They want to go fishing. And I watched Bob Mueller, and they have nothing,” Trump said to the group per BizPac Review.
He continued, saying a Republican majority could have—but didn’t pursue these same level of investigations into former President Obama or Hillary Clinton: “We want to find out what happened with the last Democrat president. Let’s look into Obama the way they’ve looked into me. From day one they’ve looked into everything we’ve done.”
“They could look into the book deal that President Obama made. Let’s subpoena all of his records,” Trump added. BizPac Review reports his statement is likely in reference to “the lucrative joint book deal with Penguin Random House that Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama signed in 2017 after leaving office, worth more than $65 million, according to the Financial Times.”
“Let’s subpoena all of the records having to do with Hillary Clinton and all of the nonsense that went on with Clinton and her foundation and everything else. We could do that all day long,” the president said.
BizPac Review adds:
He also took a shot at his predecessor for the White House air conditioning system which he said worked fine before but now cannot maintain a comfortable temperature.
Responding to a question about an upcoming trip to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., the president replied, “It’s never a vacation.”
“The Obama administration worked out a brand new air conditioning system for the West Wing,” he said.
“It was so good before they did the system,” he added. “Now that they did the system, it’s freezing or hot in here.”
Trump’s criticism of Democrats earlier in the gathering highlighted their relentless efforts to impeach him, which he denounced while calling them “clowns.”
“You know the amazing thing about the Democrats, it was all fine, everything was great four or five years ago before I was president. And now they think we’re gonna win so they’re doing everything they can with the impeachment nonsense. We had no obstruction. We had no collusion,” Trump said.
“You know, obstruction’s sort of interesting,” Trump said, defending his decision not to stop Mueller. “I gave them totally [free reign]. And then they say obstruction.”
“These people are clowns. The Democrats are clowns. They’re being laughed at all over the world,” the president concluded. “And it’s a disgrace. And the world is laughing at them. And, unfortunately, it’s so bad for our country.”
