President Trump successfully worked behind the scenes to secure the release of American rapper A$AP Rocky from a Swedish prison, where he faced an assault charge and was detained for over a month.
While A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was detained, Trump tweeted several times that he would do everything he could to get Mayers home. This included speaking with the Swedish Prime Minister.
Mayers was returned to the United States on Friday, August 2, and Mayers’ mother thanked President Trump for his role in getting her son home.
As the Scoop reports, Mayers’ mother described that she was “very grateful” for the president’s help.
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, however, decried the intervention as a “misuse of power” during an interview at the NAACP National Convention last month.
“There is no question that this White House has been playing politics with his [Trump’s] role of leadership and it has to end,” she said when asked what she would do if she were the president.
“So, you are saying this is another piece on the rap sheet of Donald Trump, this misuse of power in the A$AP Rocky case?” Harris was again asked.
“Yes,” the Democratic presidential candidate responded.

“A$AP Rocky released from prison and on his way home to the United States from Sweden. It was a Rocky Week, get home ASAP A$AP!” President Trump tweeted on Friday.
