Bernie Sanders Nearly Knocks Himself Out In New Viral Clip

Bernie Sanders may be looking to knock out his Democratic presidential opponents to secure his party’s nomination, but it was him who was almost the one knocked out—literally—during a campaign stop in Louisville, Kentucky.

In a new, viral clip, Sanders is at the Muhammad Ali Center where he stands before a boxing speed bag and strikes it with a quick blow.

Perhaps unfamiliar with the mechanics of the speed bag, Sanders’s blow causes the bag to swivel to the platform and return to the place it was hit in quick fashion. The bag swings back to a visibly surprised Sanders who then quickly recoils out of the way, nearly hitting him.

The video is being widely shared online with some conservatives commenting on how the stunt affects his 2020 chances. Donald Trump Jr. speculated that if Sanders could not stand up to a speed bag then he certainly could not “strike fear in the minds of our adversaries.”

“This wouldn’t exactly strike fear in the minds of our adversaries. Imagine this guy sitting across the table negotiating with world leaders?” Trump Jr. responded to the video.

Courier-Journal reports Sanders was in Louisville for a campaign rally where he spoke to a crowd of about 2,000 people on Sunday. In his remarks, he criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and touted his own new plan to contest climate change.

From the report:

“I say to Mitch McConnell: Please stand with the working people in Kentucky and America, not your wealthy campaign contributors,” Sanders said.

Sanders told the crowd that McConnell was obstructing legislation recently passed by the U.S. House that would raise the federal minimum wage to $15, expand background checks on gun purchases and strengthen the country’s election security from foreign attacks.

Sanders then accused McConnell of trying to “stop democracy in the United States Senate,” by not allowing the votes.

“You don’t have the right to prevent debate and votes on the most important issues facing the working people of this country,” Sanders continued per the report. “Stop your cowardice, have the guts to debate the issues.”

In his speech, Sanders touted his campaign’s version of the “Green New Deal” – a $16.3 trillion plan unveiled on Thursday that aims to end fossil fuels use in the United States by 2050 and create 20 million new jobs in the new energy sector.

Sanders’ plan states that it would be partly funded by new taxes and fees on the fossil fuels industry, while also providing displaced workers in the coal industry with a guaranteed salary for five years. It also calls for housing assistance, job training, health care, pension support and priority job placement.
