Mainstream Media Explodes After Trump Calls 16-Year-Old Swedish Climate Change Activist ‘A Very Happy Young Girl’

President Trump drove mainstream media into a frenzy on Monday evening when he tweeted about 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.

After the two attended the same United Nations conference in New York—where Thunberg gave a passionate and pointed speech on climate change—the president described her as “a very happy young girl.”

“She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!” Trump said in a tweet just before midnight on Monday evening.

The president’s comments were posted alongside a video of the 16-year-old’s speech at the conference where she said the world was at the beginning of a “mass extinction.”

Incoming mainstream media meltdown…

Politico reported Trump “mocked 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg on Twitter late Monday.”

And, from the report:

Trump was not alone Monday in mocking Thunberg. On Fox News, Michael Knowles referred to Thunberg as “a mentally ill Swedish child who is being exploited by her parents and by the international left,” then doubled down and called her “mentally ill” a second time. The network subsequently apologized for his remarks.

USA Today similarly reported that Trump “posted a mocking tweet of a 16-year-old climate activist who drew headlines this week for her speech at the United Nations.”

Here’s more:

Trump quoted a particularly emotional line from Greta Thunberg’s address to the Climate Action Summit in a late night tweet on Monday. In it, the Swedish teen said that “people are dying” and “we are in the beginning of a mass extinction.”

Trump, who is also in New York for the U.N., posted the message in a series of late night tweets. Thunberg has Aspergers syndrome and has previously chided her critics on Twitter: “I’m sometimes a bit different from the norm,” she posted on Twitter last year. “And – given the right circumstances – being different is a superpower.”

The Washington Examiner called Trump’s tweet a “sarcastic remark”:

Trump and Thunberg went viral earlier in the day when the activist was caught glaring at the president as he arrived at the UN headquarters in New York City.

“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words,” she tearfully proclaimed to world leaders. “Entire ecosystems are collapsing, we are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!”
