Rising Dem. Stacey Abrams Claims The Electoral College Is ‘Racist and Classist… Needs To Go’

Failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams told a crowd at the National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Friday that the Electoral College “needs to go.”

In her remarks, the former Georgia House Democratic Leader said it was “racist and classist” and that the time for the Electoral College “has passed.”

Abrams countered the claim that the election body was created to better represent low population states; instead, she argued it was created to prevent immigrants in the north from having their voice heard. She claimed also served as an instrument for Southerns to count enslaved people in their representation bloc without also giving them the right to vote.

“The Electoral College was not designed because people were worried about Idaho not having enough voted. We didn’t know about Idaho,” she said to some laughs from the crowd.

“What we did know, the population in the south was roughly equal to the north but because Black people were not considered humans or citizens, they wanted their bodies to count in terms of population count but not their humanity,” she continued. “The Electoral College was designed to give southern states the ability to count the bodies of slaves but not allow them to cast votes.”

According to NBC News political reporter Alex Seitz-Wald, Abrams also denied that would reconsider her position not to run for the presidency in 2020.

Several people online quickly pointed out that the Electoral College that elected President Trump is the very same Electoral College elected former President Obama twice, Twitchy reports.
