Democrats Release 300-Page Report Claiming Trump Is Abusing His Presidential Power

Democratic lawmakers have released a 300-page report which they claim shows evidence of President Trump abusing his presidential power to score a political favor.

The report centers on claims that the president withheld financial aid to Ukraine to encourage them to investigate former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

“In doing so, the President placed his own personal and political interests above the national interests of the United States, sought to undermine the integrity of the U.S. presidential election process, and endangered U.S. national security,” the Democrats said in the report, ABC News reports.

In addition to this, Reuters reports that Democrats are claiming Trump “undermined national security and ordered an ‘unprecedented’ campaign to obstruct Congress.”

The lengthy report summarizes the investigation of the House Intelligence Committee—which has since handed off the investigation to the House Judiciary Committee—about these claims which surfaced after a whistleblower shared the contents of a phone conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky.

Reuters adds:

The heart of the impeachment probe is whether Trump misused the power of his office to pressure Ukraine to investigate the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading contender for the Democratic nomination to face Trump in the 2020 election.

The public release of the report is a milestone in a weeks-long investigation into whether Trump should be removed from office over his dealings on Ukraine. It summarizes hours of private testimony and televised hearings in which former government officials described a months-long effort to pressure Ukraine to carry out the investigations sought by Trump in July.

The report’s completions hands the process over to the House Judiciary Committee, which will now be responsible for drafting actual articles of impeachment should lawmakers decide to move forward. That panel will begin proceedings on Wednesday.

Democrats are also arguing Trump’s noncompliance with congressional subpoenas, intimidating witnesses, and not respecting Congress’ constitutional authorities could cause lasting damaging to the republic.

According to Reuters, Democrats in the report argue “damage … will be long-lasting and potentially irrevocable if the President’s ability to stonewall Congress goes unchecked.”

“Even President Richard Nixon — who obstructed Congress by refusing to turn over key evidence — accepted the authority of Congress to conduct an impeachment inquiry and permitted his aides and advisors to produce documents and testify to Congressional committee,” Democrats added, per ABC News.

The report’s release comes shortly after House Republicans published a 110-page report of their own attesting Trump’s total innocence.
