Ted Cruz Says Democrats Are Solely To Blame For Americans Not Receiving Coronavirus Relief Aid

Republican Senator Ted Cruz did not mince words in his speech from the floor of the Senate where he blamed his Democratic colleagues for failing to support a coronavirus relief bill.

The Texas Republican said they are the reason Americans are not receiving checks to help them and the economic impact the coronavirus has caused the country.

“On Sunday night, Democrats in the Senate blocked the bill, complaining it had too much money for corporations and not enough for individuals. Republicans are missing five senators, all of whom are quarantining, bringing the vote to a deadlock at 47-47,” the Federalist reports. The bill needed 60 votes to clear a procedural hurdle, having failed its first attempt earlier in the day.

Cruz said not one single Democrat voted in favor of the bill.

“Last night when this Senate voted on whether to move forward with emergency relief legislation for the millions of people being devastated by economic disaster we’re seeing as a result of the coronavirus epidemic, every single Democrat in this body voted block consideration of this bill,” he said per the report.

Cruz noted the Democrats were voting against a procedural move to even consider the debate (where they could subsequent debate its merits and offer amendments), ending the bill before it really even started.

“What does it mean to vote to block consideration? It doesn’t mean [Democrats] voted against the bill. It means they voted against even starting to take it up,” Cruz added.

Cruz piled on his criticism, accusing the legislative body’s Democratic members of using the coronavirus to push non-related policies.

“The famed quote from Rahm Emanuel, that’s President Obama’s chief of staff: ‘Never let a good crisis go to waste.’ Sadly, we’re seeing the embodiment of that cynical approach right now. Because with all the people out of jobs, the Democrats are using this to push — what are they pushing for? Changing the emissions standards on airplanes,” the Republican said. “What the h-ll do the emissions standards on airplanes have to do with thousands to people dying and millions of people out of work in the coronavirus epidemic?”

Fellow Republican Senator Tom Cotton similarly criticized Democrats for not supporting the bill.

“Pelosi & Schumer are willing to risk your life, your job, your retirement savings for a radical, left-wing wish list that has nothing to do with this virus,” Cotton said. “Disgraceful.”
