Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says the heroes that will lead society after the days of the coronavirus are drag queen “patriots.”

As the coronavirus continues to run rampant in her state of New York, the Democrat tweeted over the weekend that it was these gender-transitioning “heroes” that will bring about “true change.”

“Electoralism has limits,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a tweet. “Elected officials often don’t lead our most impactful societal changes, they follow them. The heroes who lead true change are the activists, artists, organizers & others who educate + push society forward.”

The tweet is accompanied by a video of the congresswoman with several drag queens, who praise her for “standing up to” President Trump.

“I see you standing up to that man every day,” one drag queen said, as the Washington Examiner reports. “And how can we all even, like, complain about anything when you literally stand in the face of what I think is the most … the worst parts of our nature as humans. You stand up against him and say ‘no.’ That’s so hard.”

Others in the group similarly praised the congresswoman, calling Trump “evil.”

Ocasio-Cortez answered by praising their own efforts to defy social norms and “the way people think.”

“People think Congress and government is all about leading people, but ultimately, a lot of our politics is about following the public will,” Ocasio-Cortez said per the report. “The people who change the way people think are artists and drag queens, and let’s not forget who threw that first brick at Stonewall.”

As the Washington Examiner reports, Ocasio-Cortez previously referred to these drag queens as “patriots”:

In February, Ocasio-Cortez pledged “allegiance to the drag” in an advertisement for the new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“It starts with you,” Ocasio-Cortez told the drag queens. “I mean, you’re patriots, you are, you are, you are patriots, and I’m so proud of you all, and I’m so proud to live in this country with you.”
