Biden Campaign Issues Statement After ‘You Ain’t Black’ Controversy, Claims It Was All A Joke

The Biden campaign is pushing back on controversy Joe Biden caused on Friday when he challenged Black Americans who were unsure of who to vote for in the upcoming presidential election.

During an interview on the Breakfast Club with host Charlamagne Tha God, who is black, Biden said African Americans who are thinking of choosing Trump over him “ain’t Black.”

The controversial line sparked backlash online, but Breitbart reports the Biden campaign said former vice president’s comments were just a joke.

“Vice President Biden spent his career fighting alongside and for the African American community. He won his party’s nomination by earning every vote and meeting people where they are and that’s exactly what he intends to do this November,” Senior campaign advisor Symone Sanders wrote on Twitter.

“The comments made at the end of the Breakfast Club interview were in jest, but let’s be clear about what the VP was saying: he was making the distinction that he would put his record with the African American community up against Trump’s any day. Period,” she added.

The comment came as a Biden staffer was calling for the interview to be over, citing another time commitment.

“I apologize,” the staffer can be heard saying.

The host interjected: “You can’t do that to black media.”

“I can do that to white media and black media because my wife has to go on at 6 o’clock,” the former vice president said, looking down at his watch. “Oh, I’m in trouble.”

The host conceded saying: “Ok, you got to come see us when you come to New York VP Biden. It’s a long way until November. We’ve got more questions.”

Biden responded: “I tell you, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

Fox News adds:

It’s unclear whether Biden meant to refer only to the host or to the black community as a whole.

Charlamagne tha God responded that “it has nothing to do with Trump. It has to do with the fact that I want something for my community.”

Biden fired back, “Take a look at my record. I extended the Voting Rights Act for 25 years. I have a record that is second to none. The NAACP’s endorsed me every time I’ve run. Take a look at the record.”

Many people criticized the line on social media.

Many more are calling out Symone for claiming it was all “a jest.”
