‘That Video Is A Lie’: Biden Claims ‘Doctored Video’ Contradicts His Record

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is having to correct the record after a video of him claiming he would support cuts to Social Security surfaces online.

“It’s simply a lie, that video is a lie,” Biden said per Reuters, referencing a video reportedly being circulated by Bernie Sanders’ campaign.

“This is a doctored tape. And I think it’s beneath him. And I’m looking for his campaign to come forward and disown it. But they haven’t done it yet,” Biden added, per Politico.

Biden, in response to the video which shows Biden seemingly agreeing with former House Speaker Paul Ryan on the privatization of Social Security’s retirement and disability programs, claimed “Bernie’s people” were sharing the “doctored video” online as a means to try and knock him down from his comfortable lead in the Democratic primary.

In response, the Sanders campaign claims they have not edited the video in any way. Instead, Sanders Campaign Manager Faiz Shakir argued the video is an accurate depiction of comments Biden has often made about cutting Social Security.

“Joe Biden should be honest with voters and stop trying to doctor his own public record of consistently and repeatedly trying to cut Social Security,” Shakir said in a statement, Politico reports. “The facts are very clear: Biden not only pushed to cut Social Security — he is on tape proudly bragging about it on multiple occasions.”

At the center of the back-and-forth is a newsletter the Sanders campaign distributed recently that pointed to a speech Biden gave to the Brookings Institution think tank in 2018. Biden is quoted as saying, “Paul Ryan was correct when he did the tax code. What’s the first thing he decided we had to go after? Social Security and Medicare.”

However, the video of the speech makes clear Biden was actually mocking Ryan for the proposal. He leans into the microphone and says in a deep, menacing stage whisper: “Social Security and Medicare.” Biden then goes on to say – in remarks not disseminated by the Sanders campaign – that the tax code needs to be reformed so enough revenue is raised to save Social Security and Medicare.

Politico reports Politifact ruled Biden was mocking Ryan in the quote, instead of agreeing with him, “but there is no evidence that the campaign altered any video.”

As for whether or not Biden’s record supports these cuts—like the Sanders campaign claims he does—below is a video of Biden in 2007 saying he would absolutely consider cuts to Social Security.

The Intercept published a whole report on Biden Advocating Cutting Social Security For 40 Years.

“As early as 1984 and as recently as 2018, former Vice President Joe Biden called for cuts to Social Security in the name of saving the program and balancing the federal budget,” they claim in the report.
