Pelosi Delays Coronavirus Relief Vote Again, Now Says She Will Bring It Up On Friday

The U.S. Senate worked speedily to pass a massive $2 trillion stimulus package that provides financial assistance to the economy: negotiating the bill with Trump administration officials on Tuesday, finalizing an agreement just before 1 a.m. the next morning, and passing the bill 96 to 0 later that day.

Tens of millions of Americans have lost their jobs, seeking unemployment benefits for any solace during the ongoing pandemic. Millions of more workers still hang in the balance, potentially facing job loss as businesses are unable to continue paying them.

So, Senate leaders got the job done.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, however, was not ready to take up the bill and pushed it onto Thursday’s legislative agenda.

Then, she delayed it again to Friday, the Wall Street Journal reports:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) told reporters Wednesday that she expects the House to debate the legislation on the floor, a shift from previous statements in which she said she wanted to pass it by unanimous consent, a nearly unheard of process for such a large piece of legislation that could be blocked by one lawmaker.

“Republicans have told us that’s not possible from their side,” to pass it by unanimous consent, she said. “This is a $2 trillion bill, I would like to see good debate on the floor.”

The House is likely to pass it by a voice vote, where members call out “Aye” or “No” and not a roll-call vote where names are recorded. That option allows members who are present to register dissent, but the bill could still be passed based on a vote of those in Washington and allow those wary of returning to stay home.

Twitchy speculated the more likely reason Pelosi delayed consideration on the bill (rather than her kindly allowing Republicans the time to debate the bill’s merits), is because Thursday is her 80th birthday.

Here’s how some people responded to Pelosi’s decision:
