Trump: ‘I Think Mail-In Voting Is A Terrible Thing… If You Vote, You Should Go’

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has some people looking ahead to the November elections and wondering how the federal government may look to change the procedure.

One leading idea, currently being pushed in Congress by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is an all-mail election.

According to her proposal, all eligible Americans would receive a ballot by mail and would not be required to venture out to a polling station. The ballots would then be mailed, collected, and counted, to determine who wins local, state, and federal elections.

President Trump shared during a daily briefing on Tuesday that he disagreed with the idea, calling it a “terrible thing” and “corrupt.”

“I think mail-in voting is horrible, it’s corrupt,” Trump told a group of reporters at the White House, noting a distinction between absentee voting and required vote-by-mail.

“You know why I voted? Because I happen to be in the White House and I won’t be able to go to Florida to vote,” the president continued. “There’s a big difference between somebody that’s out of state and does a ballot and everything’s sealed, certified and everything else. You see what you have to do with the certifications.”

Trump explained that changing the process could lead to “thousands of people sitting in somebody’s living room signing ballots.”

“No, I think mail-in voting is a terrible thing. I think if you vote, you should go,” he added.

The Independent Journal Review reports November is still months down the road and the government will have to put any changes into law:

While Trump has suggested that voting by mail in the November election could hurt the Republican Party, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has pushed for mail-in voting.

There was $400 million in the last stimulus package signed by Trump to help with voting by mail and early voting. However, Pelosi is pushing for more funds in the fourth stimulus package for this.

Trump’s comments on Tuesday came as voters in Wisconsin headed to the polls to cast their votes in the primary amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The move to continue with the election on Tuesday was met with opposition, including from Pelosi, who suggested Wisconsin’s Supreme Court was “undermining our democracy.”

Additionally, 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders said, “Let’s be clear: holding this election amid the coronavirus outbreak is dangerous, disregards the guidance of public health experts, and may very well prove deadly.”
