House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants to see President Trump’s tax returns—as she wants to see if he has any foreign connections—but she is not willing to release her own private tax information in return.
During a conference call interview with Just The News, Pelosi responded to the United States Supreme Court decision effectively delaying Democratic attempts to get Trump’s tax information where she said House Democrats should be able to hold the president accountable.
Trump has been in a legal battle against New York prosecutors and House Democrats attempting to get access to his tax returns. New York prosecutors are investigating whether Trump was aware of or personally paid “hush” money to two women who brought sexual accusations against him. House Democrats want to see if the president owes any money to foreign entities or accepted any money thereof to illicit favors from the White House. These lawmakers have accused the president of being allied to the Russian government.
“The Court has reaffirmed the Congress’s authority to conduct oversight on behalf of the American people, as it asks for further information from the Congress,” Pelosi said per Just The News. “Congress’s constitutional responsibility to uncover the truth continues, specifically related to the President’s Russia connection that he is hiding.”
Then the outlet asked whether Pelosi plans to release her own tax returns—possibly as a “goodwill” notion or in fairness to the president.
It should be noted it is only customary—not lawful— for a president to release his tax information.
“When and if I decide to run for president, I will most certainly release my tax returns,” she answered per the report.
Trump responded to the interview in a short tweet, calling her answer: “So cute.”
