Michelle Obama Blames Trump Admin, Among Other Reasons For Her ‘Low-Grade Depression’

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is suffering from “some form of low-grade depression” and is blaming President Trump among other reasons.

In the Wednesday episode of her new podcast, “The Michelle Obama Podcast,” Obama said “racial strife” across the country, Trump’s “hypocrisy” and the coronavirus-related lockdowns were causing her to feel “low.”

She said she has also had to reach out to family members and friends.

“I’m dealing with some form of low-grade depression,” Obama said, as the Daily Caller reports. “I reach out to my family, and to my friends, even in this time of quarantine.”

“I’m waking up in the middle of the night because I’m worrying about something or there’s a heaviness,” she continued via CNN. “I try to make sure I get a workout in, although there have been periods throughout this quarantine, where I just have felt too low.”

“You know, I’ve gone through those emotional highs and lows that I think everybody feels, where you just don’t feel yourself, and sometimes there’s been a week or so where I had to surrender to that, and not be so hard on myself. And say, ‘You know what? You’re just not feeling that treadmill right now,'” she added as the Hill reports.

“Not just because of the quarantine, but because of the racial strife, and just seeing this administration, watching the hypocrisy of it, day in and day out, is dispiriting,” Obama said.

The Hill reports the former first lady also cited George Floyd’s death and subsequent race riots for her emotional lulls.

“I don’t think I’m unusual, in that,” Obama said. “But I’d be remiss to say that part of this depression is also a result of what we’re seeing in terms of the protests, the continued racial unrest, that has plagued this country since its birth. I have to say that waking up to the news, waking up to how this administration has or has not responded, waking up to yet another story of a Black man or a Black person somehow being dehumanized, or hurt or killed, or falsely accused of something, it is exhausting. And it has led to a weight that I haven’t felt in my life, in a while.”

Obama also vented frustration over people who resist or refuse to wear a personal protective mask.

“There’s almost like there’s a limit to our sacrifice and it was about a month and then we just got tired of the virus,” she said per the report. “That’s been disheartening to see so many people who have grown tired of staying at home because the virus didn’t impact them.”

“We’ve been through tough times in this nation [but] we are in a unique moment in history… We are living through something that no one in our lifetimes has lived through,” she added.

The Daily Caller adds:

Her remarks come after Barack Obama lashed out at Trump during the funeral for Democratic Georgia Rep. John Lewis in July over the president’s handling of the protests in Portland. “We can witness our federal government sending agents to use tear gas and batons against peaceful demonstrators,” he said, adding that there are also people “in power” trying to suppress the vote.
