Protesters Set Kenosha Ablaze After Police Officers Shoot Jacob Blake

Protests erupted in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday evening after police officers reportedly shot an unarmed black man seven times earlier in the day.

Jacob Blake, who was later identified by law enforcement and confirmed by the governor, was taken to the hospital in critical condition after a call for police over a domestic incident resulted in his shooting.

According to video taken during the incident, law enforcement officers attempted to question and detain Blake when he defiantly walked away towards his vehicle. The officers yelled and used a taser as Blake continued to open his vehicle and reach inside. At this point, at least one police officer discharged his firearm. Seven shots can be heard on the video.

The Daily Wire reports Democratic Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers released a statement shortly after the incident critical of the law enforcement officers involved.

“Tonight, Jacob Blake was shot in the back multiple times, in broad daylight, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy and I join his family, friends, and neighbors in hoping earnestly that he will not succumb to his injuries,” he said. “While we do not have all of the details yet, what we know for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement in our state or our country.”

“And we stand against excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black Wisconsinites,” the statement continued. “I have said all along that although we must offer our empathy, equally important is our action. In the coming days, we will demand just that of elected officials in our state who have failed to recognize the racism in our state and our country for far too long.”

The Kenosha Police Department released its own statement shortly after the incident, confirming they responded to the incident and that the Wisconsin Department of Justice would be investigating the incident.

Shortly after the news of the shooting broke, protests and violent demonstrations reportedly erupted across the city.
