‘Biden Is Making This Up’: Fact-Checkers Shred Biden Claim During Town Hall On Thursday Evening

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden usually gets a pass by mainstream media outlets but even they had to step in and fact-check him during his CNN Town Hall on Thursday evening.

Because it was that bad.

Biden, standing on a stage six feet from host Anderson Cooper, said President Trump was responsible for the nearly 200,000 people that have died to the coronavirus.

The Daily Wire reports Biden said: “If the president had done his job, had done his job from the beginning, all the people would still be alive. All the people—I’m not making this up. Just look at the data. Look at the data.”

“All the people”

Glenn Kessler, a fact-checker for Washington Post, responded by saying: “Biden is making this up.”

“There is no data to support this,” he added.

Actually, Biden is making this up. There is no data to support this, even if the president had moved rapidly in January to deal with the coronavirus and been able to persuade the Chinese leadership to be more forthcoming about the situation. Even nations that have been praised for their handling of the pandemic, such as South Korea, New Zealand and Iceland, have suffered some deaths (377 in South Korea, 25 in New Zealand and 10 in Iceland).

In the United States, with 50 states run by governors, policies have varied greatly. Trump has been faulted for not articulating a national plan, but he would have had trouble persuading every governor to follow the exact same path.

Christopher Cadelago, who writes for Politico, similarly said Biden’s claim was incorrect.

In a report, he said Biden “vastly overstated what protections could have worked against the virus.” The Democratic nominee’s remarks were “not true,” he added.

Politico also reports the CNN Town Hall with Biden was a “total pass” and “more like an affable reunion of old acquaintances” than the “icy grilling” Trump received when he appeared on ABC News.
