Investigators are analyzing the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump by 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, who opened fire at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, with a planned explosive distraction.
Crooks visited shooting ranges, obtained ammunition, and had a detonator along with explosives in his car, indicating a potentially premeditated attack.
Despite extensive investigations into his motives and interests in coding and gaming, no clear ideological reasons for the attack have emerged.
The legal firearm used was owned by his father, an advocate for responsible gun ownership, who has been cooperative with authorities.
Security lapses during the incident prompted the Secret Service director, Kimberly Cheatle, to take accountability, citing safety concerns that influenced decision-making during the event.
“That building in particular has a sloped roof at it’s highest point and so, you know, there’s a safety factor that would be considered there that we wouldn’t want to put somebody up on a sloped roof and so, you know, the decision was made to secure the building from the inside,” Cheatle said.
