During a House Judiciary Committee hearing, FBI Director Christopher Wray disclosed that an individual within the agency is under investigation for posting “totally inappropriate” content regarding the assassination attempt on former President Trump.
Wray confirmed that while he was not aware of any agents expressing disappointment over Trump’s survival, one specific instance of unacceptable rhetoric prompted a referral to the FBI’s inspection division for internal investigation.
“That individual has been referred to our inspection division, which is our sort of internal affairs investigatory arm that does the disciplinary process,” Wray said.
The hearing also revealed disturbing details about the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, including his search history related to presidential assassinations and his suspicious activities prior to the rally.
Wray noted uncertainty about how Crooks accessed the rooftop from which he aimed at Trump, as the ladder he purchased was not found at the scene.
“We did not find the ladder at the scene,” Wray said. “He did buy a ladder. But the ladder was not found at the scene.”
This testimony followed the resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle amid scrutiny over security failures at the July 13 rally.
