CNN’s senior data reporter, Harry Enten, revealed a significant trend showing former President Donald Trump gaining ground with Black voters, while President Joe Biden’s support among this demographic has declined.
Enten highlighted Trump’s remarkable increase to a 21% margin, a significant jump from his previous 7% in 2016, potentially leading to historical performance for a Republican candidate.
“I keep looking for this to change, to go back to a historical norm, and it simply put, has not yet,” Enten said.
“That’s a 16-point drop, John,” Enten added, “and more than that, it’s not just that Joe Biden is losing ground. It’s that Donald Trump is gaining ground.
The shift is particularly evident among younger Black voters, where Biden’s lead has drastically decreased.
“If anything, we’re careening towards a historic performance for a Republican presidential candidate, the likes of which we have not seen in six decades,” he added.
“A slight decline” among older Black voters, “but nothing out of this world,” Enten noted.
“Holy cow,” he said regarding younger Black voters. “That lead has dropped by more than half. I’ve just never seen anything like this. I’m, like, speechless. Because you always look at history and go ‘OK, this is a historical moment.’ If this polling is anywhere near correct, we’re looking at a historic moment right now where Black voters under the age of 50, which have been such a big part of the Democratic coalition, are leaving in droves.”
The findings suggest a noteworthy departure of younger Black voters from the Democratic coalition towards Trump, signaling a substantial shift in voter dynamics that could impact the upcoming elections, especially in crucial swing states like Georgia and Michigan.
