Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for meeting with former President Donald Trump, suggesting that McConnell should have avoided the meeting due to Trump’s perceived danger to democracy.
Schumer’s views on Trump’s presidency contrast with public opinion, as polls indicate a favorable view of Trump’s term.
“Well, let me just say this. I think there are a good number of Republicans, McConnell included, who know deep in their hearts and deep in their minds what a danger he is to democracy, and what a disaster he’d be as president,” Schumer said.
“McConnell should have had the courage not to show up. He knows, I think, he knows deep in his heart what Trump is like and what Trump would do,” he said.
Meanwhile, McConnell described the meeting positively, emphasizing its constructive nature.
Trump’s recent interactions with Republican lawmakers included discussions on campaign strategies for the upcoming election, with Trump expressing support for the party’s success.
“We had a really positive meeting. He and I got a chance to talk a little bit, shook hands a few times,” McConnell said.
“It was an entirely positive meeting,” McConnell added. “I can’t think of anything out of it to tell you that was negative.”
The meeting included a surprise birthday celebration for Trump, with discussions touching on various topics like unity, border security, China, and abortion policies that include exceptions.
Trump’s birthday activities included addressing The People’s Convention in Michigan and participating in a MAGA Boat Parade.
