California’s expanded gun-free zones for concealed carry permit holders will be implemented from January 1, 2024, following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signing of a bill.
A preliminary injunction against the law was issued by U.S. District Court Judge Cormac J. Carney, who highlighted concerns about self-preservation and the potential for mass violence in gun-free zones.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta expressed intent to appeal the ruling, emphasizing the importance of maintaining gun control laws.
Rob Bonta said, “This ruling will allow our common-sense gun laws to remain in place while we appeal the district court’s dangerous ruling. Californians overwhelmingly support efforts to ensure that places like hospitals, libraries and children’s playgrounds remain safe and free from guns.”
