Vice President Kamala Harris’s spokesman, Michael Tyler, faced tough questioning from CNN’s Jim Acosta regarding Harris’s limited media availability during her campaign.
Acosta criticized Tyler’s defense of Harris’s approach, emphasizing that campaign rallies do not substitute for press conferences, and pressed for a commitment to a media appearance.
Tyler maintained that Harris is focused on direct voter engagement and mentioned plans for an interview by the end of the month, but Acosta pointed out that this was insufficient.
“Michael, you know that a campaign rally is not a press conference,” Acosta said.
“We absolutely are” going to take press questions, the spokesman said. “You heard her do it as she’s out on the stump,” he said. “She said we’re going to be having a sit-down interview here before the end of the month. What she’s going to be focused on, and what this campaign’s going to be focused on, is communicating directly with the voters that are going to be deciding the pathway to 270 electoral votes.”
“Can you commit to a press conference this week?” Acosta asked. “Yeah,” Tyler said.
“Yeah, but Michael one interview by the end of the month… I don’t want to belabor this, but one interview before the end of the month, I mean, that’s not a lot,” Acosta said.
Harris has faced scrutiny for her unscripted remarks and has struggled with various roles within the Biden administration.
Meanwhile, former President Trump has criticized Harris’s intelligence and contrasted his own press engagement with her lack of transparency, as both continue to negotiate debate terms.
